Boston Globe Exposes Nursing Home Neglect Resulting in Death

The Braemoor Health Center in Brockton, Massachusetts was the recent subject of a damning Boston Globe report which exposed the nursing home’s horrid state of affairs. Among other things, the report details the tragic death of a dementia patient from a heart attack. The nursing home’s nurses and health aides lacked the training to revive the patient. Appallingly, the nursing home then failed to report the death to the state health department because of the fear of “bad press,” and justified this decision by arguing that the decedent “had no family” anyway.

The shocking report describes a completely dysfunctional nursing home with insufficient staffing, poorly maintained and defective medical equipment, and inadequate security features. The report articulates the findings of state regulators who visited the nursing home unannounced last month. The conditions in the home were so horrible investigators stated the residents were in “immediate jeopardy.” The investigating officials ordered the facility to cease admitting any new patients and levied a fine of $200,000.
